Shedding light on the ever so gracious, African American Sports Journalist, Taylor Rooks

Once upon a time, the sports industry was a male dominated field. There was a point in time where you could turn on ESPN and see nothing but the caucasian male. Oh how times have changed. Not only has women in the sports entertainment industry become more prevalent, but african american women are starting to appear and take over at an ever growing rate.

You may recognize Taylor Rooks from her new Bleacher Report series, “Take it There With Taylor Rooks.” Taylor is an American Sports journalist and broadcaster. This St. Louis native graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she majored in broadcast journalism.

Before joining the Turner Networks, she wore many different hats at Sportsnet New York where she was a host, reporter, and correspondent. Prior to her position at Sportsnet, she worked for the Big Ten Network. Taylor graciously appeared on BTN Live, BTN Football Pregame, and Women’s Sports Report. For the 2016-2017 season Taylor also worked as a sideline reporter for CBS Sports Network.

It is no secret that Taylor has a insurmountable amount of sports journalism experience under her belt while only being 26 years old! Me being a woman who is looking to have a place and make a difference in the world of sports, I am nothing short of inspired by her brilliance, style, and grace. Every interview that she does, she emits an aura that makes you want to hear what she has to say. She makes everyone feel her down to earth presence and want to open up to her in a way they probably normally would not open up to any ordinary journalist.

Taylor is a symbol of motivation for all african american women looking to find their footing in  the caucasian male dominated sports entertainment industry. She shows us that you can graduate college and make something for yourself no matter what you look like or where you come from. As a woman it does not take you belittling yourself or throwing your morals and ethics out the window to make it to the very top. All it takes is hard work and dedication as well as betting on yourself even when there are not any other betters.
